Winston Churchill: An Amazing Figure in Western Civilization

If you’re studying Western Civilization, you have to spend some serious time studying Winston Churchill. I don’t say this from the standpoint of passing tests, although a thorough knowledge of Churchill will help that too.

Winston Churchill is a man of contradictions–by all accounts a boozer, but with an amazing intellect and set of leadership skills. He led Great Britain through one of the darkest periods of history to stand firm against Hitler’s evil Third Reich. What I find intriguing about Churchill is how he did it with both humor and conviction.

Churchill’s quotes from speeches and various writings are funny and poignant, even today, and range in topic from economics to liberty and beyond. Here is a small sample:

Some good Churchill quotes:
  • Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon.
  • We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.
  • You can always count on Americans to do the right thing–after they’ve tried everything else.
  • From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I shall not put.
